Transcript of a wrong-number SMS
I received a strange text on my phone this morning:
Hello mate its ray this is traces number my fones playin up over ere. Just thought id send u a quick txt 2 say it was gr8 catchin up with u lads yesterday. poor trace is sufferin a bit this mornin ;-D. enjoy the match pal
Now, I don't know anybody named "Ray". So after careful thought, I sent the following response:
Yeh was gr8 last nite. Lookin 4wrd 2 game. Hope its ok, she prolly told u, but trace an me had a snog when u went out 4 a fag
("Fag" still means "cigarette" in England.)
I didn't hear from the enigmatic Ray for several hours. Then, I got this text:
Fuckin potato munchin numptys
At this point, I decided that I'd probably better make Ray's error clear to him before something tabloid-worthy occurred...
(that's what you get for texting the wrong number! ;)
It didn't work.
Its ray m8!
It's Emmett m8!
That was the last I heard from Ray.

Make update -- still need help If you're a coding whiz who knows make well (I'm starting to doubt that such a person exists), I still need your help.
What I'm trying to do, again, is individually gzip all the .js files under a certain directory. Here's how far I've gotten:
FILES_STATIC = mydir/build/blix/blix.js mydir/build/blarg/blarg.js
FILES = $(shell find mydir/build -name '*.js')
%.js.gz: %.js
gzip -c $< > $@
compress: $(FILES:.js=.js.gz) $(FILES_STATIC:.js=.js.gz)
@echo $(FILES)
When compress runs, it should do both the static and generated lists. The generated one evaluates to nothing, though. The echo command correctly prints out the generated list. If I try to echo $^, I get a blank line. Note that the files do not exist at the beginning of the script: they're de-archived before compress is called.
What madman designed make anyways? Did someone really write the language up, put together the first build based on it, and go to bed that night thinking they'd left the programming world a better place?

Calling any Makefile experts I'm crossing my fingers that someone on my f-list is a rare expert on Makefile syntax. I'm not, nor can I find any.
What I need to do is gzip all the .js files under one directory (not flat, but in subdirs). Any idea on how? Can make even do that?

Ameca's Mt R liabN work Sounds rather like a transcript of conversations I remember having when I was with Verizon.

(For the record: Verizon was the absolute worst in coverage and reliability, by a large margin, of the three wireless networks I've used: Verizon, Sprint and AT&T. ATT is the best by far)

Semi-spam: moving sale!
T minus two weeks and counting. Selling almost all my remaining possessions at pretty darn low prices. Some of it might be more of interest to friends on here than to, say, the general Craigslist community.
Details are behind the cut, but here's the general selection:
- Heather Alexander 10 CD collection
- Weird Al Yankovic 10 CD collection
- Adventure games for PC, 8 games in all
- Board games including the posh Deluxe Scrabble and the kitsch Mad Magazine game

Laptop accessibility So it just occurred to me that laptop computers aren't generally very accessible for zombies. The trackpads are heat sensitive, so their fingers wouldn't even register!
Something should be done about this.

Thoughts on an old TV show Seven Days.
It's an interesting if poorly executed science fiction show. But has it ever occurred to anyone that the launch team would never get the chance to improve their technique by learning from past mistakes? Every single launch would be the first one for them.

Advice with overseas shipping I have a number of boxes (not yet packed) containing most of my worldly possessions that I need to ship to London. Obviously, shipping via normal couriers is unreasonably expensive for this. This is the best deal I've seen yet ($235 for up to 2000lbs/25 cubic feet).
Has anyone done such a thing before? Would I need to go to the port and pick up the stuff when it arrives (and does that vary depending on the company)?

OK this is eerie I'm watching the TV show Seven Days, which was an admittedly mediocre American science fiction programme about time travel.
In it, there's a US President who looks astoundingly like GW Bush. He even says the word "nukyular" instead of "nuclear".
This particular episode was released in 1998. Well before even the primary campaigns.

Gas prices and time machines It's curious how a TiVo can inadvertently become a time machine.
I am just now watching a show recorded in early June. There's an ad for the local CBS station's news item: "Bay Area's cheapest gas prices". Inside the ad video is a subvideo of a petrol pump's LCD. I think that, even in early June, the video was a month or so out of date:
35.53 total sale 11.578 gallons
That comes out to about $3.07 a gallon. Current local prices are around $4.60, last time I fueled up.

The premise of red eyes I propose the following theory:
Just because someone's eyes begin glowing red doesn't mean that they're thirty seconds away from ripping your heart out through your kneecaps.

The premise of uniforms I propose the following theory:
The basic idea behind any uniform is to put someone in a set of clothing that nobody would generally wear by choice.

New beginning Every new beginning should open with a new drink creation. Here's mine:
Circus Peanut 4oz Tropicana Orangeade (sugarfree or non) 3/4oz Banana liqueur
Adjust the amount of banana liqueur, and this will taste exactly like a day-glo orange circus peanut (but without the veg-unfriendly gelatine).

The end of a story Sometimes, the epilogue to a story is longer than all the chapters put together. This was one of those times.
Thank you to all who helped. The slate is at last clear for new stories to unfold.
One conclusion I came to, with the help of one of you:
Trouble shared with a friend is trouble lessened. Trouble shared with the world is trouble gained.
This will serve me well in my coming adventures.
The next story There's a very unusual music group, 2NU, that I like. Most of their stuff is spoken word against music. This is the monologue from the song Crossroads:
CrossroadsYou've reached a crossroads in your journey. Which way to go now? I think to myself: If I go left, down this road... there's the risk of death and destruction, a life edged with fear and high adventure. And of course the possibility of total ruin. But if I go right, my life will be as if I was to spend eternity alone in a glorious field of beautiful flowers whose aroma would only remind me of good things, pleasant things. It would be a safe, peaceful existence. I would no that no harm would come to me ever. But would I be able to spend all time -- eternity -- in the safety of a place without the promise of a thrill, a kiss, a slap in the face, or the sweet, sweet taste of revenge against those who do me wrong? I dunno. Which way would you go? What road would you take? I am Nardo Polo, world's greatest marble player. And this is how it all began.
Suffice it to say that I chose left.

iPhone hacking for vampires Just seen on the show Moonlighting: a close-up of one of the main character's iPhone. With Installer.app icon on it, and other things that reveal that it's obviously hacked.
Let's be honest — is there anyone who owns an iPhone and hasn't hacked it?
(Secondary observation: the scene was filmed on the 12th of some unknown month, according to the calendar icon. What a strange science fiction world we live in.)

My name is Inigo Montoya. You are Chuck. Prepare to die. I am almost certain I just saw Mandy Patinkin (best known as Inigo) on the TV show Chuck. The particular accent is... sort of unmistakable. And, except for the addition of a mustache, it sure looked like the current photos of him on IMDB.
He's not listed in the credits... but they don't show many of the performers, and he was a minor character.
Wonder if I should submit it to IMDB...

Sarcasm kills I nearly choked to death laughing, when I saw this a moment ago on my TiVo's programme listings: "The Birds (1963) -- A playgirl follows a bachelor to Bodega Bay, where, for no apparent reason, birds kill."
Apparently, they don't have a strong editorial process for plot summaries.

Bouncy! So there was a 5.6 quake just a few miles from me at 8:05pm tonight. I was still at work, on the 2nd floor. The building started shaking like mad, growing over time. Took me about five seconds to figure out what was happening, and then I crawled under my desk for the remaining fifteen or twenty seconds.
When I got home, my downstairs neighbour (who's usually asleep by 7pm or so) asked me if I'd felt the "big jolt". She said that the whole building was making a cracking noise, and she was nervous that my apartment was going to fall into hers.
Inside, I found rather a lot of stuff on the floor. One picture off the hanger, another at a 30 degree angle, a frying pan that had been hanging on a hook now sitting in the kitchen sink next to the hook that used to be in the ceiling.
In all, it was great! Better than anything at Disneyland.
Still haven't seen Branwen since I got home. She didn't even come out when I opened the treat bag. I expect she's still hiding somewhere.
